New Romantics

Looking at 80's and 18th century fashion I couldn't help but look at The New Romantics. Which was a fashion movement in the 80's inspired by period costume. Although it links very well with what I'm looking at I think it looks too theatrical and too over the top (very 80's) I think I need to be careful when choosing my own styling otherwise the photo-shoot and in particular the video will look too theatrical. I think this will depend on the way the video is filmed and the correct mixture of 80's and 18th in keeping within a contemporary feel. At the moment this is very changeling but I think it helps that there is a lot of video reference that will encourage this.

I think when it comes to the New Romantics, Adam and the Ants are at the top of the league with their over theatrical videos and costumes. I think the videos are very similar to that of period dramas. Each video seems to have a story behind it, almost as though it is a film.

I think Duran Duran's Wild Boys video defiantly uses a similar theatrical appearance as Adam and the Ants had in their videos. I think the reason for so many videos exploring story type videos is due to the fact that videos had only just started. I'm guessing that with this new technology there were able to film out their dreams and create almost small amateur films. Something I like in these videos is the change of scenes. I think the Adam and the Ant's videos showed a step by step story where this video is almost like a montage of events. I think I prefer this way as it leaves the viewer to put together the story.

Although this video isn't notably period referenced, there are still elements that link. I really like the way the video is filmed due to the mixture of shots which the video goes through smoothly. I like the way the camera follows the bride down the walkway, it focuses on her but there is still visual knowledge in the background. I think the contrast between the soft daytime setting combined with the darker flashes of indoor stage work really well together as they clearly show a different time/area. I think this is something that could possibly work well for my own video keeping in contemporary.
