Tester Shoot in the Studio

I decided to do a tester shoot for this project because of the enormity of it. Natasha Hale, one of my models dropped out completely last minute and Ilana was ill. I therefore had to find two more female models during the day to stand in for them. Anushka's friend Holly Macedo and Emily's friend Elise Price managed to step in for me. I had two girls (Lauren Ward and Emily Indah) from make-up helping me out with the make-up and hairstyling. The shoot was at the photography studio that we had booked for 4.30 - 8.30.
I had Anushka and Naomi Farmer helping me out with the dressing and styling. This was very helpful as a lot of the clothing had many layers and the stays needed more than one person to tighten them. Also having four models to dress was very time consuming so the extra help was needed.
Emma wears an 80's inspired playsuit with Electric blue shoes and lace gloves. The Georgian style stay worked well to break the 80's look up but I think it works better with one shoulder out as you can see more detail of it.

Elise wears an 80's slogan T-shirt with 18th C Panniers and stockings. She is also wearing Doc Martens and sunglasses. I felt the pink Leg warmers completed this outfit and gave it the right amount of 80's mix with 18th Century.
Elise wears 18th Century dress with stockings and electric blue shoes. I think either the hat or bow works well although I think the hat is more in keeping with the 80's. One mistake I made with this outfit was I forgot to add the panniers before I did up the stay. When it comes to the Kingston shoot I will make sure to put them on the model before the stays are done up.
Emma wears a slogan t-shirt with an 18th Century underskirt. She is also wearing Doc Martens, Yellow tights and Panniers (not seen).
Holly wears a green 80's dress with lace gloves. She also wears panniers and heels (hidden).
Holly wears an 18th Century dress with a Denim jacket, Sunglasses and Doc Martens (hidden).
Elise wears 18th Century dress with pink gloves and sunglasses, with pink tights (hidden).
Matt wears a blue shirt and trousers both 18th Century inspired with 18th Century Waistcoat and pink socks.
Matt wears 18th Century Jacket and Breeches with slogan t-shirt and hat with pink socks and Doc Martens.
Matt wears yellow slogan t-shirt with 18th century neck tie and breeches. Yellow socks and Doc Martens.
Anushka doing up the back of Elise's stay.
Emily doing Holly's make-up.
Lauren doing Elise's make-up.
Emily photographing Emma.
Emily doing Holly's hair.
The side of Emma's hair done in an 18th Century inspired style.
I think the looks work really well. It is good to have a basis to work with as on the actual day of the shoot we will be very busy just getting to different locations. I have asked Elise to be my extra model for the shoot as Natasha has dropped out. I think she worked really well with the costumes and had a lot of enthusiasm which came out in the photographs and hopefully will happen on the actual day.

Back to the Fuschia

I found this photo-shoot which was taken for Dazed and Confused magazine January 2008's issue by Mariano Vivanco. This is a great find as it was inspired by Jem and The Hollograms which was one the Girls inspirations. I really like the use of the bright colours and the whole movement of the shoot. The composition and lighting is excellent as it gives a very futuristic look which looks energetic and keeps the photographs alive. Although my shoots will be on location its a good example on how to use one space and keep it animated. I think the video below is good proof on how popular videos are becoming during photo-shoots, the one from this photoshoot really embraces the whole energetic feel and is cleverly edited to look almost like a pop video from Jem.

Video

I really like the fun, playfulness of this video. In my video I want to show a lot of movement and excitement especially when it comes to the outdoors shoot at Kingston Lacy. In the house I want to create a very strict type feel with them almost wishing to go outside and once they can they can explore the garden with fun and excitement.

Iris Brosch

I found this photo-spread by Iris Brosch really inspiring. I think it is a good example of contemporary fashion mixed with a period setting and period clothing. I love the lighting and composition of the photographs. I think it shows how well more models can work together to make it look more interesting and give it more depth. I think the hair brings together aspects from the 80's (with the criming) and elements from the 18th Century (with the big, wig-like styling).

Collaborating with costume student Anushka Tay

Today I had a meeting with Anushka Tay, a costume student who will be helping me out during my photo-shoot for the Tester Shoot and The Kingston Lacy shoot. I think it will be beneficial to have a costume student that has the knowledge of the Georgian period.
Working with a costume student has also enabled me to have access to the Costume store where I have managed to hire a few extra items to go with the things I am already borrowing from people.

Mood Board of Make-up and Hair Styling

I put together a mood board of the make-up and hairstyles that I felt related well to the 18th Century and the 80's. I think the Stanmer shoot should be kept very traditional with the wigs, perhaps bringing in the 80's with the make-up. Where the Kingston Lacy shoot should be more relaxed with oversized hair as an up-do style to show the freedom of the outdoors. I think the make-up should be more dramatic in the outdoors shoot as there will be a lot to take away from the models so the more striking they are looking the better.

Mood Board of Clothing

I've put together a mood board of the overall image I want to put together to merge the 18th Century with The 80's. This has benefited me as it has shown me how well the looks work together. It also clearly shows the people I am working with what I'm hoping to create.

Budget and Clothing

For my budget I am going to leave aside £100. I am thinking that the majority of this will go on petrol to drive to Brighton and back and also to Kingston Lacy.
The majority of clothing for the 18th Century look will be borrowed from students. However the 80's clothing and accessories I will mainly have to buy.
I've managed to buy two pairs of Doc Martens boots (one pair for £12 and the other at £10) I've also managed to borrow two other pairs meaning that all my models will have boots for the grounds at Kingston Lacy.
I have also bought a denim shirt (£12) and two pairs of tights (£2.99) from H&M and borrowed some dungarees.
I am still looking at getting some cheap Rayban style sunglasses but may also be able to borrow them.

Total:£39.98

New Photographer - Emily Passmore

As soon as one problem is fixed another problem arises. Having not heard from my photographer Nicola Smith, over the Easter Holidays I have become increasingly worried that she will now be unable to take the photographs for me. I have therefore spoken to Emily Passmore who did my previous photo-shoot for my Entomology and Ornithology project to see if she will help me out. Because we live together she is familiar with all the work I have been doing which if I find another photographer I would have to explain my whole concept again. Having also worked with her and Alex Gardiner in the last project it means that we all know that we can work together well. I am very pleased that I looked at finding another photographer as when I spoke to Nicola she said that she may not be able to shoot the photographs as she had a lot of work on. What I am learning with these projects at the moment is that nothing ever goes to plan and I must be prepared to work with it or have a back up plan.

Make-up Artists - Lydia Pankhurst, Laura Hyman and Charlotte Stagg

I've spoke to my friend Lydia who I've previously worked with who is from Brighton. She is a 3rd year Make-up student from Northbrook College. We have previously worked together and I am fairly confident she will be able to create a traditional Georgian look as she has done two similar projects. Lydia and her course mate Laura will be making the wigs for the look and Charlotte (a 2nd year) will be helping with the make-up. They will be helping me out for the Stanmer shoot in Brighton. I'm very excited as she will be setting the wigs for my two models to match their hairstyles, I think this will really make the look complete!

Photoshoot in Brighton - Model's Lizzy Perryman and Katie Roberts

Lizzy Perryman
Height - 5.7. Shoe Size - 7. Hair - Brown. Eye colour - Blue.Katie Roberts
Height - 5.11. Shoe Size - 8. Hair - Long Blonde. Eye colour - Brown.

Because I am now doing a photo-shoot in Brighton as well as Bournemouth I thought it would be easier to work with models in Brighton. I have chosen to work with Katie and Lizzy because I have worked with them both previously and know they are good models. I'm thinking that the Stanmer Park photo-shoot and film should be very contained and reserved in the house. This would have often been seen in the 18th Century. Whilst outside (in the Kingston Lacy shoot) they can relax and let their 'hair down' bringing together the freedom of the 80's.

Martin Granados at Kingston Lacy

Typically as soon as I had sorted out a new location. Martin Granados the manager at Kingston Lacy got back to me to say that shooting in the grounds at Kingston Lacy.
Despite all the confusion and alterations to my plans this may have paid off. I know have the use of the beautiful grounds at Kingston Lacy and the interior of the house at Stanmer Park. My plan now is to perhaps make Stanmer house appear as though it is the inside of Kingston house despite doing it at another location.

Stanmer Park

As I have still not heard back from the people at Kingston Lacy (despite continuing to call almost everyday) I have contacted Stanmer Park. Stanmer Park was built in the early 1700's and has the typical characteristics of a Georgian House. The reason I had not considered Stanmer Park as a location option is because it is in Brighton, East Sussex.
But because of problems in Bournemouth, I have decided that it may be easier to move the photo-shoot to Brighton where I am from and where I therefore have models and make-up artists that I know there that would be able to help me out.

Hi Samantha

I've been forwarded your email after speaking to a member of staff at Stanmer House.

I'm currently looking for a location for a Georgian inspired photo-shoot.

I'm a fashion student from The Art University at Bournemouth in my 2nd year and this current project was about exploring what we love and inspires us.

Having lived in Brighton all my life I have always loved Stanmer Park and felt it would be a great place to recreate the 18th Century life of the Estate but with a contemporary twist.

I'm looking to do the photo-shoot after the Easter Holidays later this month probably over one weekend (although I may be able to do it during the week if this is a problem).

As well as doing the photo-shoot I also have a film student who would do a small fashion film to go alongside the photo-shoot.

I would be interested in doing some photographs in the house but mainly in the grounds.

I can also provide all copies of the photographs and film to Stanmer House for its collections.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like some more information.

Look forward to hearing from you

Vicky Smith

Samantha has got back to me straight away to say that I can use the house to do my photo-shoot, which is an added bonus as at Kingston I would have been unable to use the inside of the house.

I think the wall colours and window seats would look great with the model dressed in Georgian clothing. I think the house has a lot of potential despite not having the furniture. I think the sense of space in the rooms and smaller details like the ornate panels and doors will be enough to be reminiscent of the Georgian period. Stanmer Parks Virtual Tour of the house really helps to give a sense of the inside of the house and possibilities on where to photograph and film.
I think the grand staircase would be great to feature the model walking down the stairs and draping along the banisters.

Male Model - Matt Small

Height - 5.11. Shoe Size - 8. Hair - Brown. Eye colour - Green.

I've managed to find a male model who would be interested in helping me out with my Kingston Lacy shoot with my three other female models. I think his darker features will contrast really well with the other models who are fairer. I'm hoping to perhaps show him as a strong character or the complete opposite with him being a bit of a fop.

18th Century Inspired Garments - Scottacus Perkin

Scott from Fashion Studies is designing his current outfits on 18th century costume. This is really beneficial to me as it means I have 18th century clothing with a contemporary twist. Below show some of the toilles he has developed so far.
